The Airbus A320 is a family of medium-range narrow-body aircraft for short- and medium-haul airlines, developed by the European consortium Airbus SAS. Launched in 1988, it was the first mass-produced passenger aircraft to use a fly-by-wire control system. The aerodynamic configuration is a twin-engine low-wing monoplane with swept wings, a single-fin vertical tail, and turbofan engines located under the wing.
The A320 program officially began in March 1984. The first flight of the A320 prototype with CFM56-5A1 engines was on February 22, 1987. The aircraft was certified in Europe in late February 1988 and in the United States in December. Air France received its first aircraft in March 1988.
The A320 is the world's first commercial airliner with a fly-by-wire (FBW) system, a cockpit equipped with sidesticks instead of conventional control columns, and a horizontal tail made entirely of composite materials. The 150-seat A320 served as the basis for the development of the A321 (170-seat, 1994), A319 (116-seat, 1996) and A318 (99-seat, 2003).
The Airbus A320 has a range of up to 4900 km, cruising speed of 840 km/h. Capacity is 140-180 passengers.
